Welcome!

~ Welcome to the Blog, Y’all! ~

Hello! My name is Joanne Calderwood, and I am so glad you stopped by!

What will you find here?

You will find the thoughts and mind wanderings of a woman who is still in the throes of  child-rearing three children ages ten and under plus a tweener 12 year old, and is enjoying the individual personalities of four teenagers. Two of those four teens are either in college or leaving for college in a couple of months.

Did I mention I still have a six-year old? Ah! The joys and challenges of managing a household, or is it being managed by a household? =D

I am *so* not perfect, but I love my life now more than ever because I don’t expect myself to be perfect! My family knows I am not perfect; oh boy do they ever! We are here to enjoy each other and enjoy the days we have together, as they are fleeting.

Click on the top link at the right to read about my background and experiences both professionally and personally.  You’ll hopefully know more fully where I am coming from and what my educational philosophy is.

For now I just want to welcome you to this brand new blog aimed at allowing me an outlet to tell a story, share insights, and provide freebies that may help moms, especially homeschooling moms, enjoy the journey of motherhood just a little bit more.

I hope you will feel free to walk alongside me at this spot on a regular basis.

I say “alongside,” but perhaps you are a bit behind me in your stage of life meaning you have young children only. How I remember those long days when my first three babies were four and under. How I lived for Oprah at 4 pm because I knew that daddy would be home by the time she was over!

Perhaps you have school-aged children and you are thinking about home schooling. You will find plenty of encouragement here for taking that route! While I do not believe that home schooling is the answer for everyone, I do believe it is a wonderful option available to families today.

Perhaps you have been home schooling for a little while but you are not very confident about your choice. Stick around! I think we can help you there.

Perhaps you have been homeschooling for a few years, and you just don’t know how you can do this for just one more day! Please let me know how I can help! I have been there myself, but with the self-teaching method of education, I no longer feel that way! Check out the self-teaching links!

Perhaps you have older children and younger children, and you are just looking for some ideas. Feel free to look around the blog once I have had a chance to put stuff up here. I would love to pick your brain for ideas as well!

Perhaps you are up ahead of most of us on the road of child-rearing and your children are grown, but you are interested in self-teaching or the mastery methodolgy for your grandchildren. Your life experiences in child-rearing can be a source of wisdom for those of us behind you on this journey.

We indeed can come alongside each other no matter where each of us may be on our own journey. There are certainly times when I need wisdom and advice from people who have valuable experience from which I can learn.

I hope to share some of the wisdom I have gleaned from others along my journey. Most of what I have learned, I have learned either by observation or from direct input from others, especially from my husband.

I am forever indebted to those who have come before me on this journey and to those who stop where they are, turn around and help me along. Time for a pay-back. (I also am indebted to Google, which is merely the compass to point me to those for whom I am searching. Ha!)

We are all on the same journey, although we each take different paths to reach our destination, which in this sense is the raising of Godly, well-brought up kids who are intelligent and inquisitive about the world in which they live, who seek out their own answers using the resources at their disposal instead of buying directly into the status quo.

May our children be the generation that makes a difference! May their education never cease with the realization that learning is an enriching and a never-ending, joyful journey.

Oh, Thank you Joanne for writing this! For all your experience that you are sharing here! I am glad I found you! Fairly new (starting my third year) to homeschooling, but love it! It gives me hope and encouragement to read about others who have been at longer and still love it…and their kids!
    Thanks again!

    Dear Joanne,

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just finished your articles from a free trial of HSE that I received at a homeschool convention last weekend. I believe fully in the methods you describe in your article. I have a 7th grade daughter who has been doing mostly all of her work independently since I began home schooling 4 years ago. This year, I actually started to feel panicked because I thought I was not doing enough teaching with her and started thinking she needed to go to public school for high school. You have encouraged me so much and breathed new life into my plans for the future of her education(along with my younger son). I am praising God for bringing this resource into my hands! I just had to write to thank you. I am so excited to dig deeper into your blog, join your yahoo group and order some of your materials.

One question I have(so far), is there a place where you list the curriculum that you have used with your kids. I read one blog post that mentioned that you have used the same materials for 16 years, so I am curious to see what has been beneficial to your self-teachers.

    Blessings to you!
